Background of the Study
This evaluation examines the role of women in agricultural cooperatives in Sagamu Local Government Area, Ogun State. Agricultural cooperatives are critical for rural development and food security; however, women’s participation has traditionally been limited by socio-cultural and institutional barriers (Johnson, 2023). Despite their significant involvement in agricultural activities, women often face challenges in gaining leadership roles and accessing cooperative resources (Smith, 2024). This study explores how women’s contributions to cooperative efforts can be optimized to improve productivity and foster community development. The research incorporates qualitative and quantitative methods to assess participation levels, decision-making power, and the overall impact of women-led initiatives within cooperatives (Brown, 2025). Recent literature emphasizes that empowering women within agricultural cooperatives can lead to more sustainable and inclusive economic growth (Ade, 2023). The study aims to provide insights into the successes and limitations of current practices and to recommend strategies for enhancing gender equity in agricultural cooperatives.
Statement of the Problem
Women in Sagamu’s agricultural cooperatives face challenges that limit their full participation and leadership. Traditional gender roles and institutional biases reduce their access to critical resources and decision-making processes, thereby undermining cooperative efficiency and sustainability. This study seeks to identify these barriers and propose viable solutions to empower women in the agricultural sector, enhancing both productivity and community development (Johnson, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the level of women’s participation in cooperatives.
To identify barriers limiting their leadership roles.
To recommend strategies for promoting gender equity in cooperatives.
Research Questions:
What is the current role of women in agricultural cooperatives?
What challenges restrict their full participation?
How can these challenges be mitigated?
Research Hypotheses:
H₁: Women are underrepresented in leadership positions within cooperatives.
H₂: Institutional biases hinder women’s access to resources.
H₃: Empowerment programs improve women’s participation in cooperatives.
Significance of the Study
This evaluation is significant in highlighting the potential of women’s contributions to agricultural cooperatives, providing a basis for policy reforms that enhance gender equity and sustainable rural development. The study’s outcomes will benefit both cooperative members and local communities (Smith, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses solely on agricultural cooperatives in Sagamu Local Government Area. Limitations include potential bias in participant responses and limited access to comprehensive cooperative records.
Definitions of Terms:
Agricultural Cooperatives: Organizations that pool resources and efforts of farmers for mutual benefit.
Empowerment: Processes that increase individuals’ control over economic and social decisions.
Gender Equity: Fair treatment and opportunity regardless of gender.
